Welcome and Introductions

 

Kathy Albert called the meeting to order at 1:30.  Introduction of attendees: Kathy Albert, Dyan Emerson, Shannon Atherton, Sandra Johnson, Lorna Harger, Paulette Madison, Nancy Daniels, Elena Reed, Laurie Del Genio, Pat Moreno, Angela Palmer, Jane Montford, Barbara Hathaway, and Debbie Opdahl

 

Minutes

 

Minutes from the November 15, 2007, FOL meeting were approved.  All FOL meeting minutes are posted on the website. 

           

Treasurer Report

 

Kathy gave the Treasurer Report.  She presented a cost of $120 for website domain and hosting.

 

 

Grant Writing Report

 

Jane gave a report on grant status.  The HEB grant submitted by the FOL for $2400 for a display case was declined.  HEB would participate in FOL fund raising events, but will not provide cash to purchase items.

           

Kathy will work with Randall’s to link Randall's Card to the FOL group.  The Friends will receive a percentage of money spent by someone with their card linked. 

 

Lowes can give up to $2500 for community grants.  Kathy would like to contact them for the gardening program the Friends group is hosting this spring.

 

Membership Drive Report

 

Kathy discussed hosting a fun membership event at someone’s home or an alcohol free community event in the library community room on the 2nd floor.

 

Communications

 

Kathy still needs assistance to get notices to the paper about meetings and other press releases.

 

 

FOL Programs

The Genealogy Program is scheduled for February 25, 2008.  Kathy presented a draft of a flyer with details of the program.  The library has subscribed to Ancestory Online.  A representative from the State Library will present.  A representative from Michaels will present about Heritage Scrapbooking.  Barnes and Nobles, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas will also participate.  The group discussed the entrance fee.

 

The Gardening Program will be tied to Earth Day.  Kathy would like someone to co-chair the planning for this event.  Lorna suggested her mother-in-law.

 

The One Book Lake Travis Program will be supported by a Capstone student from the University of Texas.  This student will work with the Lake Travis Library, the Bee Cave Library, the Lake Travis school libraries, and the Chamber of Commerce.  The first meeting is scheduled for February 5, from 6-7 pm in Community Room B.  This meeting will be to discuss possible books to be read by the Lake Travis community.

 

Director’s Report

 

Over 400 people attended the grand opening of the new Bee Cave Library.  The number of people visiting the library has tripled.  Story time attendance has tripled. 

 

Western Travis County Historical Society donated $10,000 to be use for genealogy and history.  Wells Fargo Bank donated $2,000 in connection with their grand opening.  Sam’s Club has offered to donate $1,000.

 

Celebration of Dr. Seuss birthday is scheduled for early March.

 

The group discussed how to handle books donated by the public.  One possibility is to ship the books to a sister city in another country.  Shannon has a potential outlet for the books with a local woman who is building libraries in Jamaica.  Pat also may have opportunities to distribute the books in Mexico.
